Some spirits tell a story. Aphro is the story of; pride, passion, and power distilled into every drop.

When we first met the Aphro team at the Accra Bar Show, there was an immediate connection. The same creative spark. The same respect for tradition. The same drive to push African excellence into the global spotlight. For us at Moe’s Tavern, that’s the kind of partnership that just makes sense, it’s authentic, ambitious, and rooted in culture.

What is Aphro?

Aphro Spirit is an organic, triple-distilled palm spirit made in Ghana. It’s the evolution of ‘akpeteshie’ the traditional West African Palm Wine, elevated through innovation while preserving the heritage that inspired it.

Much like rum, vodka, or tequila represent their homelands, Aphro stands proudly as the spirit of Africa, unapologetically bold, culturally rich, and unmistakably original.

The Journey — From Palm Wine to Palm Spirit

The story of Aphro starts with palm wine, a centuries-old tradition across West Africa. Tapped from the single-trunk palm tree, fresh sap is collected, fermented, and distilled using age-old techniques. Vapour is heated, condensed, and transformed into a clear, potent spirit that carries the earthiness of the palm and the soul of the land.

This method isn’t just chemistry; it’s culture. It reflects a deep connection to the natural environment, a balance between human craft and organic creation.

Locally known as ‘akpeteshie’ in Ghana, this spirit has long symbolised resilience and identity. During the Gold Coast’s colonial era, British authorities banned local distillation, seeing it as a threat to imported spirits. But the people never stopped. They kept distilling as a quiet act of rebellion and pride that lived on until Ghana gained independence in 1957.

Aphro honours that spirit of defiance. It’s the modern evolution of a once-banned drink, now celebrated globally as a premium African creation. A reminder of who we are, where we come from, and how far we’ve come.

Five Years of Building Legacy

Five years ago, in the heart of Ghana, a vision was born to create a world where Africans can celebrate who they are, loudly and unapologetically.

From the start, Aphro made a promise: to remain authentically African. Local ingredients. Traditional distillation. Partnerships with small-scale farmers. Every bottle tells a story through its vibrant, art-inspired design. A visual echo of the culture it represents.

And the world noticed. In 2020, Aphro won Spirit of the Year at the Ghana Beverage Awards. Today, it’s available not only in Ghana but across the UK, USA, Nigeria, Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, and Cameroon. A true symbol of African excellence on the world stage.

Aphro Three Pillars — Pride, Passion, and Power

  • Pride: The distillation of palm wine is a time-honoured West African tradition. Aphro preserves that legacy by transforming palm sap into a refined, flavourful spirit that celebrates craftsmanship and nature’s connection.

  • Passion: More than a drink, Aphro is a cultural preservation project. It reclaims African heritage by adapting ancient distilling techniques to modern standards, offering a taste of history to the world.

  • Power: Born from resistance, Akpeteshie once defied colonial control. Today, Aphro stands as a symbol of independence and identity. A spirit that embodies Africa’s ability, creativity, and pride.

Moe’s Tavern x Aphro — Telling the Story Through Experience

Our collaboration with Aphro goes beyond cocktails, it’s storytelling through taste. Together, we’re introducing Aphro to UK audiences, bringing the energy, culture, and craft of Ghana to new markets.

For Moe’s Tavern, this partnership is about bridging brands and culture together, turning authenticity into creative impact. Every drink we craft, every campaign we build, is a chapter in the larger story of African innovation and identity.

In the End…

Aphro isn’t just a spirit; it’s a statment symbol, that Africa’s traditions have always belonged on the global stage.

As Aphro celebrates its fifth anniversary, we’re proud to be part of that journey, amplifying voices, connecting stories, and raising a glass to Pride, Passion, and Power.

Because this isn’t just about what’s in the bottle. It’s about what it stands for. A truly unapologetic African experience.
